3.2 PREPARATION <br /> A. Roots or balls of all plants shall be adequately protected at all times from sun and/or <br /> drying winds. Balled and burlapped plants that cannot be planted shall immediately upon <br /> delivery,be set on unfrozen ground and well protected with soil,wet peat moss or other <br /> acceptable material. Bare rooted plants shall be planted or heeled-in immediately upon <br /> delivery. <br /> B. No plant shall be bound with wire or rope at any time so as to damage the bark or break <br /> branches. Failure to do so will require removal and replacement at the Contractor's <br /> expense. <br /> 3.3 PLANTING <br /> A. Unless specified otherwise or noted on the drawings,planting pits shall be essentially <br /> circular with a diameter greater than the diameter of the ball or pot. All plants shall be <br /> placed at a level the same as the original grade at which the plant grew. <br /> B. Remove twine from base of trunk and cut or peel back burlap at top 1/3 of rootball prior <br /> to fmal backfilling. <br /> C. Planting at parking islands and other contained planting areas,shall include planting soil <br /> from curb to curb,or pavement to pavement,as the case may be. <br /> D. Planting along north side and northeast corner of building is a woodland restoration <br /> intended to match existing stand of trees on the other side of Medina Road(100 yards <br /> west). Relatively close and irregular spacing is appropriate. <br /> 3.4 GROUNDCOVER PLANTING <br /> A. Contractor shall adhere to the number and spacing of groundcover plants designated in the <br /> Plant Materials Schedule. Number of groundcover plants designated in the Plant Material <br /> Schedule will not necessarily cover all mulched planting areas. Contractor shall use best <br /> professional judgement to determine which areas are to be given highest priority in terms <br /> of coverage,with the understanding that front edge of planting areas,(i.e.those areas <br /> most visible)are to receive highest priority. Areas beneath shrubs,and areas behind <br /> shrubs,are to be given the lowest priority. <br /> 3.5 PRUNING AND SHEARING <br /> A. Prune,at the time of planting,to remove all dead wood, suckers and broken or badly <br /> damaged branches. Prune to preserve the natural form and character in a manner <br /> appropriate to each plants particular requirements. All pruning shall be clean and smooth, <br /> leaving branch collar with bark intact and uninjured at the edges.
