action as noted below shall be at the discretion of the testing laboratory representative.
Testing shall include hand auger penetrations, one penetration for every 30 feet of
trench.
a. If soils beneath the trench bottom exhibit competency similar to moderately well
consolidated mineral soils, the installation of pipes and structures need only
incorporate normal bedding requirements.
b. If soils beneath the trench bottom exhibit general competency with some limited
local zones of soft or compressible materials,. subcut excavation and installation
of pipe trench stabilization is required. If trench bottom exhibits a general
condition of soft or compressible materials, a general application of subcut
excavation and pipe trench stabilization is required.
The additional excavation(subcut excavation) and placement of pipe trench stabilization
when recommended by the testing laboratory representative, shall be considered as extra
work and compensated for per unit price. .
3. Excavation for Structures: Excavation for manholes or similar structures shall provide
at least 12 inch clearance between structure face and excavation.
4. Temporary Provisions: Where existing active sewers are encountered during
trenching, provide adequate provisions to divert flow or pump as necessary to
maintain operational function and provide dry work area.
5. Sheeting and Shoring: Except where trench banks are cut back at stable slopes, trench
excavations shall be sheeted, braced and shored as necessary to provide protection for
workmen, pipe and structures.
3.5 BACKFILL
A. Stabilization Aggregate:
1. Line unstable trench with geotextile fabric, providing enough fabric so that aggregate
can be fully wrapped as detailed.
2. Place stabilization aggregate material in maximum loose lifts of 6", and mechanically •
compact each lift until there is no further evidence of consolidation.
B. Pipe Bedding:
1. Place pipe bedding material in maximum loose lifts of 6".
2. Compact each lift to 98% Standard Proctor Density(ASTM D698).
3. Test compaction every 200 lineal feet of trench.
ADDENDUM#1
1607.001 - ORONO ICE ARENA(CP-2) Page 02220 - 5
