3.4 EXCAVATION
A. General Excavation:
1. General excavation shall include all materials of every nature and description
encountered in obtaining lines and grades shown on Drawings. It is assumed that the
materials can be removed by power shovel, crawler tractor, scraper or other
equipment normal to excavation work, but not requiring the use of drills or blasting.
2. All excavations shall be made to the proper depth with the proper allowance made for
materials to follow.
3. All select suitable materials removed from the excavation shall be used as far as
practicable in the context of allowable applications.
4. Contractor shall, at his own expense, form all dams, construct temporary ditches,
pump or do whatever other work is necessary during the progress of the work to keep
excavations area free of water at all times.
5. All unsuitable material encountered in excavation areas where some type of loading
will be superimposed shall be removed.
6. If in the prosecution of the Work it is necessary to interrupt existing surface drainage,
sewers, or underdrainage, the Contractor shall provide and maintain temporary
drainage facilities until permanent facilities are completed.
7. Refer to this Specification for disposal of unsuitable materials and excess materials.
8. Contract amounts will not be adjusted for unauthorized over excavation.
B. Building Area Excavation:
1. Excavate the building area to subgrade elevations as follows:
Footings: See structural drawings.
Rink Area Floor: 1001.5
Lower Floor: 1002.9
Upper Floor: 1005.6
Sloped Seating Area: As required to provide 12" granular cushion beneath
underside of concrete.
2. Once design sub-grade elevation as been achieved, the testing laboratory shall observe
and test the subgrade as to its competency. If additional subcut is required beneath
footing elevation to remove soft or unstable soils as determined by the testing
laboratory representative, said subcut shall include lateral oversizing at a 1:1 ratio; i.e.
each additional foot of excavation depth shall include an equal lateral increase.
ADDENDUM#1
1607.001 - ORONO ICE ARENA(CP-2) Page 02200 - 9
