MINUTES OF THE REGULAR ORONO COUNCIL MEETING HELD AUGUST 24, 1987 <br />RECOGNITION OF FIRE CHIEFS CONTINUED <br />Mound Fire Departments' equipment, manpower, and <br />training is compatible to comparable cities. <br />City Administrator Bernhardson introduced Chief Paul <br />Klapprich of the Wayzata Fire Department. <br />Chief Klapprich stated that the Wayzata Fire Department <br />was established in 1912 and currently has a force of 30 <br />fire fighters. Their equipment consists of a 2,000 gpm <br />pumper, snorkel pumper, rescue van, and utility van. In <br />1986, only 3 emergency calls of the total 107 calls were <br />from Orono. In 1987 year -to -date they have had 9 <br />emergency calls from Orono. He noted that the increase <br />is in part due to the dry summer. <br />City Administrator Bernhardson introduced Chief Rick <br />Perry of the Long Lake Fire Department. Chief Perry is <br />an Orono resident and operates Perry's Auto Service in <br />Long Lake. Chief Perry has been on the Long Lake Fire <br />Department for 20 years and served as Chief for the past <br />five years. <br />Chief Perry stated that the Long Lake Fire Department <br />was established in 1915 and currently has a force of 27 <br />fire fighters which includes two women firefighters. <br />Their equipment consists of 3 pumpers, 2 tankers, rescue <br />truck, utility pick -up, and a boat. He noted that the <br />boat and the oldest 1956 pumper needs to be replaced. <br />In 1986, 68 emergency calls of the total 121 calls were <br />from Orono. The total calls for 1987 year -to -date are <br />117, noting again the dry summer accounting for the <br />increase. He noted that there are a number of false <br />emergency calls of non - permit burns or persons not <br />calling in their burning permit number. He felt this <br />issue should be addressed. <br />Mayor Grabek asked about the strategy for fighting a <br />f ire on Big Island. <br />Chief Perry stated that due to the elevation and <br />proximity of the homes on Big Island, they would <br />probably only be able to protect the surrounding <br />property of the house on fire, feeling that during <br />certain times of the year it is an extremely difficult <br />situation. <br />City Administrator Bernhardson stated that the Maple <br />Plain Fire Department was established in 1930 and <br />currently has a force of 30 fire fighters. Their <br />equipment consists of 2 pumpers, 2 tankers, grass rig, <br />and a rescue van. In 1986, 13 emergency calls of the <br />total 138 calls were in Orono. Total 1987 year -to -date <br />calls are 121, predicting to set a record this year. <br />7 <br />■ <br />
