MINUTES OF THE
ORONO PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING
Tuesday,January 18,2005
6:00 o'clock p.m.
(#05-3072 Orono Public School District, Continued)
Lawson stated they would like to recognize a possible sponsor of the sign.
Fritzler stated he is fine with the placement of the sign as long as it complies with current requirements
for line of sight. Fritzler indicated he is against the sponsor panel since that is advertisement and not
related to school activities. Fritzler inquired what the square footage would be if the sponsor panel were
removed.
Curtis indicated the sponsor panel is 1' by 8'.
Winkey inquired why the school district is proposing a sign of this size.
Lawson stated they attempted to follow the City's monument sign standards.
Leslie indicated he also is not in favor of the sponsor panel since it would then become a commercial sign
located within a residential zone.
Rahn concurred with the removal of the sponsor panel and to leave the height of the sign as shown.
Leslie inquired whether the height of the sign would be reduced by the size of the sponsor panel area.
Rahn commented the sponsor panel is probably located three feet from the bottom and that he would
prefer to see that area landscaped.
Lawson stated the sponsor panel would probably contain the name of a nonprofit organization.
Rahn stated he would prefer to see only school related events on the sign.
Jurgens stated he has concerns that the name on the sponsor panel would change periodically and that he
would prefer a placard or a cornerstone on the end or side rather than the sponsor panel. Jurgens
commented he would like to see the landscaping around the monument increased.
Winkey stated he also is opposed to the sponsor panel. Winkey indicated he would prefer the sign remain
the same size but that the landscaping around the base be increased.
Leslie inquired whether there are any restrictions that can or should be placed on the content of the sign.
Leslie indicated he is in favor of a sign that promotes school activities but that he does not want to see the
sign used to promote non-school related items. Leslie inquired whether there currently are restrictions on
the manual readerboard.
Gaffron indicated there are not.
Curtis noted a permit is required to change the sign face.
PAGE 11
