MINUTES OF THE <br /> ORONO PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING <br /> Tuesday,January 18,2005 <br /> 6:00 o'clock p.m. <br /> (#05-3072 Orono Public School District, Continued) <br /> Jurgens moved,Winkey seconded,to recommend approval of Application#05-3072, Orono <br /> Schools, 685 Old Crystal Bay Road North,granting of a variance and conditional use permit, <br /> subject to the condition that the sponsor panel be deleted,with the understanding the size of the <br /> monument would remain at 9' 2"tall by 11' wide. VOTE: Ayes 5,Nays 1,Bremer Opposed. <br /> Bremer indicated she is not opposed to the sponsor panel remaining. <br /> Lawson inquired whether the Planning Commission approved the elimination of that panel or the <br /> elimination of the name of the sponsor. <br /> Jurgens stated the panel would be eliminated. <br /> Bremer stated the total area of the sign would remain the same. <br /> Rahn stated it was his understanding the upper signs would remain the same, with removal of the sponsor <br /> panel to allow additional landscaping around the base. <br /> Jurgens stated his motion was to allow the two upper panels of the sign to remain the same, with the <br /> readerboard panel remaining the same, and deletion of the sponsor panel in its entirety. <br /> Bremer inquired whether the total area of the monument would remain the same. <br /> Jurgens stated the height and width of the sign would remain the same. <br /> Fritzler stated that would eliminate any sponsor panel—illuminated, engraved, engrossed,painted, etched <br /> or carved. <br /> Jurgens indicated that was not in his motion. Jurgens stated he does not have a problem with a brass <br /> placard or cornerstone recognizing a sponsor. Jurgens inquired whether there are standards for wall signs. <br /> Gaffron stated if it is a part of this sign, it should be considered as part of this sign and not separately. <br /> Lawson inquired whether they could advertise school related activities. <br /> Fritzler stated the City does not want to see advertising for separate entities outside the school. <br /> Lawson stated they would like to have the size of the sign remain the same. <br /> Sansevere inquired whether other schools have similar sponsor panels. <br /> Lawson stated he is unaware of any at the present time. <br /> Sansevere requested that that information be gathered prior to the council meeting. <br /> PAGE 12 <br />
