City of Orono Project No: 000139-10047-0
Old Crystal Bay Road Reconstruction Page 16
Option B: Imprinted Pavement
Demarcating crosswalks with stamped concrete or brick
pavers creates a different look and attracts attention to
the crosswalk. There is a large amount of flexibility in
the patterns and designs.
Option C: LED Signing
Pedestrian signs with internally illuminated LED lights
are placed at a crosswalk and provide additional warning
to motorists of a pedestrian crossing the roadway.
The blinking lights can be activated by a push-button or
by passive detection.
E.12’ WIDE MEDIANS
This option allows for a twelve foot wide median to be constructed between the two roundabouts, a
distance of approximately 1,200 feet. A twelve foot median would create more of a deterrent to mid-
block crossings than a four foot wide median. It would also provide space for landscaping items such as
plantings and architectural elements to both enhance the aesthetic appeal of the project and act as an
additional deterrent to pedestrians. If this option is chosen, one of the landscaping options in the
following section should be chosen as well.
Item #10 - CC Agenda - 10/25/2010
Old Crystal Bay Road Reconstruction Feasability Study [Page 19 of 42]
