City of Orono Project No: 000139-10047-0
Old Crystal Bay Road Reconstruction Page 15
6.1 ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENT OPTIONS
Listed below are several additional roadway improvement options that may be included as part of this
project. The City should determine which of the items, if any, it would like to be included in the project.
A cost summary of each of these items is included in Section 7.0 (Cost Analysis). Cost estimates for each
of these additional improvements options are provided in the Appendix.
A. ADDITIONAL ROUNDABOUT
We have included a cost estimate to add an additional (third) roundabout at the north driveway
entrances to the Middle School and High School. This intersection provides full access for the Middle
School and High School bus circulation routes as well as access to two parking lots. A signed and marked
crosswalk is also located here. This optional roundabout would improve circulation and safety through
the intersection. See Figure 6 for the location of this additional roundabout.
B. CITY HALL PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS
The City Hall parking lot is currently in poor condition, mainly due to poor drainage. Optional
improvements to the parking lot include reconstructing the northerly half of the parking lot. See Figure 6
for the location of these improvements.
C. WEST SIDEWALK
Currently Orono High School students utilitize several parking lots on the west side of Old Crystal Bay
Road. However, there is no sidewalk connecting these lots to the High School, creating an unsafe
pedestrian environment. Constructing a sidewalk on the west side of the new roadway would provide
more favorable conditions for both pedestrians and bikers, and encourage walking and biking to school.
This sidewalk would be eight feet wide and constructed of either bituminous or concrete. If this option is
chosen, the City should decide if it should be constructed of bituminous or concrete. This optional
sidewalk would be located primarily on School District property adjacent to the existing right-of-way.
The proposed location of this sidewalk is shown in Figures 5 and 6.
D. ENHANCED PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
The base cost estimate includes implementing zebra-striped crosswalks and standard pedestrian crossing
signage at each intersection. However, there are several other features that can be implemented at
crosswalks to increase pedestrian safety by attracting more attention to the pedestrian crossings. This
report includes three optional improvements that may be used in conjunction with the basic zebra
crosswalk and signage. More than one option may be chosen.
Option A: In-Street Pedestrian Signs
These signs can be placed in the roadway
at crosswalks to provide extra emphasis to
the crosswalk.
Item #10 - CC Agenda - 10/25/2010
Old Crystal Bay Road Reconstruction Feasability Study [Page 18 of 42]
