VOCAL MUSIC STUDENTS RECEIVE, HONORS <br />The following Orono High School vocal music students <br />received one or more superior ratings for their per- <br />formances at the Suburban West Conference Vocal Solo <br />and Ensemble contest held at Shakopee High School on <br />March 10, 1987: <br />Sherri Jenkins, Casey Stevens, Vonda Williamson, Missy <br />Brehm, Kathy Skeie, Karl Pederson, Jenny Thurk, Wendy <br />Gabriel, Nicole Utsch,F.lizabeth Jones, .Jenny March, <br />Jenny Abdo, and Michelle Martin. <br />The accompanists for the contestants were Vonda William- <br />son, Missy Brehm, and Danna Bergman. <br />Howard C. Lerohl <br />Choral Director <br />DIANA LEE WINS MUSIC AWARD <br />Diana K. Lee, a tenth grade student at Orono Senior <br />High has won first place and was selected as the <br />"High School Young Artist" at the M.M.T.A. (Minnesota <br />Music Teachers Association) piano competition on <br />March 14, 1987. <br />She will perform solo at the M.M.T.A. Honurs Concert <br />at Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota <br />on June 6. Her piano teacher is Mrs. Janice Balazs <br />of Golden Valley. <br />ORONO SUMMER SOCCER <br />The Orono summer soccer program is organized to pro- <br />vide a competitive soccer experience for boys born in <br />the years of 1971-1976. The sign up meeting will be <br />held Saturday, April 4 at 10:00 a.m. in the Orono High <br />School lunchroom. <br />If enough players desire we will have teams playing in <br />the Northwest District of the Minnesota Junior Soccer <br />Association. The playing season is the months of June <br />and July. Our local teams would be competing with <br />others from the western suburbs including Wayzata, <br />Minnetonka, Golden Valley, New Hope, Plymouth, Eden <br />Prairie, Edina and Brooklyn Park as well as others. <br />Orono expects to field teams In three age levels, <br />"Boys Under 16," "Boys Pnder 14" and "Rnys Under 12." <br />The April 4 meeting is to set guidelines and determine <br />our involvement. Prospective players must bring a <br />parent to sign the registration form provided by the <br />M..I.S.A. <br />It is suggested that bows burn prior to 1971 and girls; <br />it year of age and Aden sign up at the Wayzats West <br />.Junior High School on Saturdays. March 14 and :8 fr,,m <br />9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and on Thursday, Much 14 <br />trots 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Players again muFt Minx ., <br />parent to register. <br />Cale l;raham <br />Admintstrat.jr <br />TEENS IN DISTRESS - ORONO SCHOOLS CARE ABOUT THEIR <br />STUDENTS <br />On Sunday evening, April 26, 7:00 p.m. at the Orono <br />High School Auditorium, Dr. Susan. Erbaugh will present <br />information on identification and management of "teens <br />at risk" for all interested parents. Dr. Erbaugh will <br />discuss stress and suicide intervention. She is the <br />Director of Mental Health Services at Minneapolis <br />Children's Hospital. <br />Also, Becky Halvorson, MSW, from Wayzata schools will <br />discuss Wayzata's response to "teens in distress." <br />Lynda Meador <br />School Social Worker <br />t <br />"LIFE OF THE PARTY" TO BE PRESENTED APRIL 9, 10, 11 <br />The high school drama department presents "Life of <br />the Party" April 9, 10. and 11. in the high school <br />auditorium at 7:30 p.m. <br />Billed as a "family comedy" when It was first present- <br />ed in 1945, it looks today like a hilarious sestment of <br />television's "Happy Days." Mike Tisdale (Jared John- <br />son) appears to be an early version of the smooth <br />talking Fonzie who talks a new girl (Wendy Gabriel) <br />Into hosting a big party at her house after the prom. <br />Major supporting characters include Joe Mechavich, <br />Heidi Dwinell, Mark Tomlinson, Jodi Buhrer, Jean Lee, <br />Chip Brown, and Robb Grandt. <br />Reserved seat tickets are on sale in the high school <br />office for $2.00 each. Tickets may be reserved by <br />calling 473-5472, but they must be picked up by 3:00 <br />p.m. the day of the performance. Remaining tickets <br />will be sold at the door each evening. <br />Senior citizens and district pass .:alders may pick up <br />free tickets to the opening night performance, April <br />9th. This is the only night the passes will be <br />honored. <br />D. Nelson <br />Drama Director <br />JODIE QUAM NAMED WINNER IN ESSAY CONTFST <br />Jodi Quam was named the third -place winner in the <br />statewide essay contest sponsored by Mothers Against <br />Drunk Driving and National Car Rental. The top three <br />essays have been sent to national competition. <br />the purpose of the contest is to make students more <br />aware of the dangers of drinking 4nd driving. lodi's <br />essay is Trinted in the March issue of the high <br />school newspaper, "Inside the Aquarium." Copies are <br />avail ible in the high school principal's uffice. <br />The essay was originally written as an assignstent in <br />Live Nelson's Advanced Composition class. All the <br />essays from those classes were submitted to the con- <br />test.
