Page Two
Mayor Butler
August 11, 1986
At the homeowner's request, the meeting was rescheduled.
To our knowledge, the homeowner did not show up at the meeting
and we never heard about the city pursuing this matter.
In the summer of 1985, we again resumed our calls to city
officials and were again referred to you, Mayor Butler. In
the process of complaining, we spoke with Dave Wilde of the
Assessor's office, who told us that our property value fell
in part due to the condition of the house across the street.
Several times we asked you to drive by to look at the house;
you always had a reason why you couldn't. We asked you to
take legal action as the two years had now passed, and the
site should have been upgraded by this time. Meanwhile, the
house got worse. In our final conversation, you said, Mayor
Butler, that you were resigning due to medical problems (a
bad back is what you told us), and that you would not deal
with this issue. We incorrectly assumed that you meant that
you were resigning immediately, and so, tired of fighting
city hall, we again sat back and watched as you did nothing.
This past July, we spoke with Orono Building Inspector Tom
Jacobs. He said that he was "too busy with new construction
to deal with this issue", even though he was very familiar
with it. In fact, he stated that criminal charges had been
filed and subsequently dropped against the homeowner as violation
of city codes is a criminal offense. City officials had decided
to drop the criminal charges with the intent to pursue condem-
nation proceedings. Mr. Jacobs was unable to give an exact
date when this would happen but he said that he "would.try
to get to it in July or by August".
