This property is
in a state which has been, and should again be, condemned
by city officials. Despite several phonecalls to various
city employees and yourself, Mayor Butler, we've gotten nothing
but talk in response to our pleas for action.
Before buying our home in 1983, our realtor (on our insistence)
called Orono city officials to inquire about the plans for
the abandoned -looking house directly across the street from
the house we wanted to buy. She was told that the home had
been condemned but was recently sold with the .erstanding
that the owner had two years (until Spring, 1985) to make
necessary repairs to bring the house up to suitable standards.
With this knowledge, we signed the papers and waited for the
improvements on the house.
Since that time, 3536 Lyric Avenue has deteriorated even further.
In July, 1984, we called Mayor Butler and Jeanne Masbusth (of
the Zoning Department) with our frustrations. Both said that
the homeowner had until the following Spring, 1985, to make
the necessary corrections, and that you both knew that the
building was lacking a foundation and several other city code
specified requirements. At that the time, the homeowner was
operating a non -licensed car repair business at his residentially
zoned home. In investigation of this, Ms. Masbusth found
several vehicles in the backyard which were reported abandoned
or stolen, according to police records. She wrote the homeowner
a letter asking that he appear at a City Council meeting to
explain why he had possession of these vehicles.
