w <br />r <br />i <br />u <br />"SEEPAGE PIT" An underground pit into which a sewage tank <br />discharges sewage and from which the sewage seeps into the <br />surrounding soil through the bottom and openings in the side <br />of the pit. <br />"SEPTAGE" Those solids and liquids removed during periodic <br />maintenance of a septic tank or aerobic tank, or which are <br />removed from a holding tank. , <br />"SETBACK" The shortest separation distance measured horizontally. <br />"SEWAGE" Any greywater or toilet waste. This does not include <br />ooting and roof drainage. <br />( "SEWAGE TANK EFFLUENT" That liquid which flows from a septic <br />i or aerobic tank under normal operation.. <br />t^ "SEPTIC TANK" Any watertight, covered receptacle designed and <br />` constructed to receive the discharge of sewage from a building <br />sewer, to separate solids from liquid, to digest organic matter, <br />and to store solids through a period of detention, and to allow <br />the clarified liquids to discharge to a soil treatment area. <br />• "SITE" The proposed on-site sewage treatment system area. <br />"SLOPE" The ratio of vertical rise or fall to horizontal <br />distance. <br />"SOIL -BORING" Any type of excavation capable of revealing in <br />detail, textural characteristics of soils penetrated. <br />"SOIL'CLASSIFICATION" Where soil particle sizes or textures <br />t_ are specified, t ey refer to the Guide for USDA Soil Textural <br />Classification, attached in this document as Figure 1. <br />"PERMEABILITY" The rate of water infiltration into the soil <br />expressed as a rate (inches per hour). <br />"SOIL TREATMENT AREA" An area where sewage tank effluent is <br />treated and isposed of below the ground surface by filtration <br />�- and percolation through the soil, and also by evapotranspiration. <br />"STANDARD SYSTEM" An individual on-site sewage treatment system <br />employing septic tanks and the_soil treatment area commonly known <br />as drainfields. <br />."TOILET WASTE" Fecal matter, urine, toilet paper and any water <br />used for flushing. <br />-5 <br />
