Chair Reese
A. Weed Harvest Program
Reese reported on the conclusions of the weed harvest
program. Based on this year’s experience -he milfoil budget
can be reduced for 1992, to around $200,000. Barges did
increase the harvesting program s efficiency , but they do
require high volume harvesting to justify their cost. The
insurance costs are high. LMCD is paying over $15,000 per
u • • .1,Reese continued that training prior to beginning the
harvesting program will be a priority. If there are as few
weeds next year as this year, while good news, it will be
difficult to hire a crew and keep them for the summer. A
procedure to sustain harvesting on a smaller scale may be an
option. Overall the program was satisfactory, Reese
concluded.
B. Initiative to address prevention of Zebra Mussel
infestation into Minnesota lakes
The LMCD intends to work with the DNR. LMLOA, regional
and state agencies to take a proactive stance regarding the
spread of Zebra Mussel. Reese commented on a discouraging
article about the Zebra Mussel infestation in Chicago Harbor.
The LMCD Board will be asked to consider supporting an
interagency agreement through which the Eurasian Water
Milfoil Task Force will undertake to develop a proactive
program for lakes state wide.
Reese warned that it is critical to respond quickly
toward prevention of Zebra Mussel spread or it will be too
X^te* It will take exceptional measures to prevent the
mussel from entering Minnesota’s lakes. An interagency
agreement will need authorship and statewide support from ail
stake holders.
a- ar « ^
