r <br />COUNCIL MEETING <br />NOV 9 1998 <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />crrYcroRONO <br />Date: November 4, 1998 <br />Item No: I ^ <br />Department Approval:Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section: <br />Name: <br />Title: <br />Gary Cheswick <br />Chief of Police <br />Item Description: Hiring of Part-Time Police Officer <br />Exhibits:None <br />DISCUSSION <br />The Orono Police Department has historically employed four part-time police officers to <br />help fill in, but recently due to personnel changes, the Department has currently only two part- <br />time officers and they are unable to meet the demands in filling shifts. <br />To help alleviate this problem, a selection was made from a previous recruitment and a <br />candidate with law enforcement background was picked. Tony Wittke has been a Police Reserve <br />and a part-time Community Service Officer with the Orono Police since 1995. He has graduated <br />with a Criminal Justice Associate of Arts degree and is currently working on a B.S. degree, <br />majoring in law enforcement. Tony has a very positive attitude and would be a great asset to the <br />community. <br />I am requesting permission to hire Tony Wittke who has shown a desire to work for the <br />City of Orono as a police officer. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Motion to hire Tony Wittke for the position of part-time i,olice officer, effective <br />November 10, 1998 with the starting salary of $12.25 hourly with no benefits.
