LAKE MINNETONKA CONSERVATION DISTRICT
-Environment Committee
Minutes
8:30 am, Tuesday, October 13, 1992
Norwest Bank Bldg. Conf. Rm. 135
Present:Committee Chair JoEllen Hurr, LMCD Board members
George Owen, Tom Reese; John Barten, Hennepin
Parks; Carolyn Dindorf, Hennepin Conservation
District; Nick Duff City of Woodland; John Erdmann,
Mike Panzer, Wenck Assoc/MCWD; Dick Osgood,
Freshwater Foundation; Mike Gaffron, City of Orono;
Bob Pierce, LMCD Consultant; Executive Director
Gene Strommen
MINUTES. The committee accepted the 9/15/92 minutes as
mailed.
WATER QUALITY MONITORING. The organizational meeting held
10/10/92 was reviewed by Hurr and Osgood. Twenty-five bays
were represented at the introduction to the 1993 water
quality monitoring program for Lake Minnetonka at Lord
Fletchers. Hurr recognized the co-sponsorship of Tonka Bay
Marina making the program possible with LMCD's half share in
the S2,000 program. Technical expertise by the Freshwater
Foundation is represented through Dick Osgood. The Lake
Minnetonka Lakeshore Owners Association (LMLOA) is
participating in the organization volunteers needed to
monitor the 42 bays. Hurr sees this as a valuable
opportunity for lakeshore owners to work in cooperatioft with
the LMCD and Freshwater Foundation.
The Minnehah;* treek Watershed District (MCWD) is willing to
be a partner in this Lake Watch effort for data gathering.
Panzer added, «rven though it is unable to contribute funds at
this time. MCWD hopes to attract funds in the future.
Osgood identified differences in how LMCD and LMLOA approach
certain lake issues, such as in the case of Eurasian water
milfoil (EWM) control, which this program may help each
better understand the other, for example:
• LMCD control of EWM is maintenance through
harvesting, while looking for a long-term solution;
• LMLOA seeks a fast response to eradicate, using
herbicides as needed. It supports public access
Inspections and restricted access if necessary.
Osgood believes EWM control should be a program to make it
tolerable. Total herbicide control for eradication Ic not
realistic. He adds that the Lake Watch report from the data
to be accumulated in this effort will be descriptive for Lake
Minnetonka but not that useful for other lake's purposes.
