Dr. Maresh presented information to the Board regarding high school <br />athletics and the difficulties that have arisen in winter sports as <br />the numbers of students that want to participate in these sports <br />are exceeding the capabilities of the coaching staff. He stated <br />that he had met with Steve Fedie, Mike Blanski, Doug Erickson and <br />Dr. Shutts and a participation policy was developed which he <br />distributed to the Board. <br />Dr. Mich stated that this policy will be reviewed/studied in <br />further detail and it will be brought back to the Board for <br />discussion/review before any action is taken. <br />Mr. McKown stated that the Board of Education had adjourned to <br />Executive Session after the October 11, 1993 meeting for the <br />purpose of conducting the annual evaluation of the Superintendent, <br />Dr. Mich. He stated that the Board of Education gave Dr. Mich a <br />very superior rating in his administration of the School District <br />and his leadership. Mr. McKown expressed appreciation to Dr. Mich <br />for his work and his leadership. <br />Neal Lawson provided the Board with information on the little <br />league baseball fields. He stated that the City of Orono has taken <br />action on these fields and is willing to lease land from the School <br />District for that purpose. He reviewed the rough draft of the <br />location of the baseball fields and roadway and stated that the <br />City of Orono is currently preparing a draft of a lease agreement <br />to which the administration/Board of Education can then respond. <br />Mr. Lawson answered questions from the Board for clarification <br />purposes. <br />The consensus of the Board was that the Facilities Committee should <br />provide preliminary approval on the draft so that the development <br />of the fields can move aliead. <br />With regard to 1993-94 lobbying efforts. Dr. Mich stated that Peg <br />Swanson, Martha Van de Ven and he had attended a meeting of school <br />districts within the metropolitan Educational Cooperative Services <br />Unit (ECSU) for the purpose of determining if there was interest on <br />the part of metropolitan school districts to band together for <br />lobbying purposes. He stated that the consensus of the attendees <br />at that meeting was to move in che direction of working together in <br />this effort and that while it may take some time, it is hoped that <br />this group could become visible in the upcoming legislative <br />session. <br />Ms. Julie Railsback, social worker at Orono High School, addressed <br />the Board regarding the observation of Minnesota Chemical Health <br />Week in our District the week of November 12 - 19, 1993 and <br />outlined for the Board the activities that will take place during <br />that week.
