Dr. Maresh presented information to the Board regarding high school
athletics and the difficulties that have arisen in winter sports as
the numbers of students that want to participate in these sports
are exceeding the capabilities of the coaching staff. He stated
that he had met with Steve Fedie, Mike Blanski, Doug Erickson and
Dr. Shutts and a participation policy was developed which he
distributed to the Board.
Dr. Mich stated that this policy will be reviewed/studied in
further detail and it will be brought back to the Board for
discussion/review before any action is taken.
Mr. McKown stated that the Board of Education had adjourned to
Executive Session after the October 11, 1993 meeting for the
purpose of conducting the annual evaluation of the Superintendent,
Dr. Mich. He stated that the Board of Education gave Dr. Mich a
very superior rating in his administration of the School District
and his leadership. Mr. McKown expressed appreciation to Dr. Mich
for his work and his leadership.
Neal Lawson provided the Board with information on the little
league baseball fields. He stated that the City of Orono has taken
action on these fields and is willing to lease land from the School
District for that purpose. He reviewed the rough draft of the
location of the baseball fields and roadway and stated that the
City of Orono is currently preparing a draft of a lease agreement
to which the administration/Board of Education can then respond.
Mr. Lawson answered questions from the Board for clarification
purposes.
The consensus of the Board was that the Facilities Committee should
provide preliminary approval on the draft so that the development
of the fields can move aliead.
With regard to 1993-94 lobbying efforts. Dr. Mich stated that Peg
Swanson, Martha Van de Ven and he had attended a meeting of school
districts within the metropolitan Educational Cooperative Services
Unit (ECSU) for the purpose of determining if there was interest on
the part of metropolitan school districts to band together for
lobbying purposes. He stated that the consensus of the attendees
at that meeting was to move in che direction of working together in
this effort and that while it may take some time, it is hoped that
this group could become visible in the upcoming legislative
session.
Ms. Julie Railsback, social worker at Orono High School, addressed
the Board regarding the observation of Minnesota Chemical Health
Week in our District the week of November 12 - 19, 1993 and
outlined for the Board the activities that will take place during
that week.
