Coundl Update continued
Sepiember 22, 1995
3.
4.
5.
determining the level al which thc city should soften the Water.
Infiltration and Inflow reduction. The City Council approved $15,(XX) in the 1995
Sanitary Sewer budget for infiltration and inflow (I & I) reduction efforts. Staff has
concentrated its efforts in the Saga Hill area based on a prior I & I study that indicated
a high level of I & I in this area. Efforts have included a major manhole inspection
program by the water and sewer mainienancc staff* recalibration of litt stations to enable
the analysis of pumping volumes to identify areas of high I & I. and analysis ot the
manhole inspection information to identify those manholes with the highest level of
inflow.
The next step is to televise the sewer lines in thc area of high I & I to identify additional
sources of I & 1 and to seal the lines and manholes. This work will pay for it-^df almost
immediately through reduced sewer treatment charges.
Saga Ilill park land acquisition. The Saga Hill residents have provided earnest money
to the Midway Bank, owners of the propert> to be acquired for park land, in exchange
for a commitment from the Bank to extend the purchase date to December 31, with an
additional two month extension possible with additional earnest money. The price for
the land is $145,000.
Because the Legislature placed a $50,000 cap on the amount of individual grants to be
made through the grant program, the Saga Hill group is try ing to raise the remaining
$95,OCX). If they cannot raise the full $95,000 the land purchase may need to be split
into two parts. One $100,000 piece in 1995 and one $45,000 piece in 1996. Thij would
involve the city applying for an additional $22,500 grant in 1996 to he matched by the
residents for the purchase of the final piece.
At this lime the Saga Hill group has not been successful in obtaining any large grants.
However, they are optimistic about several potential donors.
The Saga Hill group also has contacts in the park land acquisition grant progiam who
indicate the Saga Hill project is very high on the priority list. They expect the $50,000
grant to be awarded to the city.
Update regarding health concerns at 1972 Shadyxvood Road.
