City Council Workshop Meeting
May 8.199S
Page 2
communicated to the Police Chief and the Police Department and the
following month the report should reflect the results of the goals established.
Local Problems and Issues
The City Council established the following as priorities for the Police
Department:
1. Visibility and enforcement of Personal Watercraft Ordinance at Nelson
Lakeside Beach. The Council desired to have a police officer present at
Nelson Lakeside Beach at approximately 4;00 p.m. to inform personal
watercraft users that the Cities of Long Lake and Orono have passed a
Personal Watercraft Ordinance that does not allow them to be on the lake
after 6:00 p.m. They also desired to have a police officer return at 6:00
p.m. to, at a minimum, assure that the watercraft users that were present
at 4:00 p.m. see the police presence at 6:00 p.m.
2. Higher visibility and presence of the Police Department in the City of Long
Lake Parks and neighborhoods. The Council would also desire the police
officer to stop at Holbrook Park, get out of his/her vehicle and be present
and among the youth participating in the baseball/softball games taking
place at the park.
3. Higher visibility and better communication with the commercial property
owners in the City of Long Lake i.e., checking doors for security and
safety after hours, communicating on a regular basis with property owners
about security and better follow-up on complaints made. The Council
requested foot patrol in the Long Lake area by the officer assigned to the
Long Lake Squad Car. The Council also requested the Police
Department to provide 12 hours of bicycle patrol at different times of the
week throughout the summer.
Local Problems
The City Council identified a number of local problems that they wanted the
Police Chief to be aware of and consider working on.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:05 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Joseph P. Lynch, City Administrate
