session; that on February 3 the Boara will meet with area
legislators for a continental breakfast and discussion regarding
the upcoming legislative session.
Dr. Mich stated that a Cocurricular Council will be developed to
review/study equity in athletics and other cocurricular areas and
also the Board policy that relates to this area of concern. He
stated that the Council will be comprised of Dr. Carl Shutts and
Steve Fedie as exofficio members of the Council, three coaches or
advisors, three students selected by the Student Council, three
parents selected by the Booster groups, and John Maresh will
represent the Board. This group will stay intact as an advisory to
the athletic program and meetings will be held at least once during
each season of sports and will make recommendations to
administration. He stated that the Council will be formulated
within three weeks and after preliminary work has been completed,
the Board will formally approve the Council as a continuing
committee of the District.
Some parents were present at the Board meeting, and during
community members questions and comments, they expressed concern
regarding the athletic program. Dr. Mich and Board members
responded to these parents and answered questions regarding this
issue.
Chairman Franklin stated that, with the consensus of the Board,
they would move to Agenda Item F3, a report from Mr. Mark Mallander
of AMSD.
Mr. Mark Mallander, Executive Director of the Association of
Metropolitan School Districts, provided the Board with a brief
preview of the upcoming legislative session and the work that AMSD
is doing on behalf of our School District. Mr. Mallander answered
questions from the Board for clarification purposes.
Dr. Mich and Board members expressed appreciation to Mr. Mallander
for his informative report and for the hard work that he does for
the AMSD member districts.
UPON MOTION by John Maresh, seconded by Jack Veach, the Board of
Education approved the attached Policies and Regulations, 7101,
7101.3 and 7301 as revised and deletion of 7301.1, 7302, 7302.1,
7302.2 and 7601.
This was a second reading and was approved as presented.
Board member Martha Van de Ven reported on the progress of the
Facilities Council. She stated that the Council is scheduled to
visit various school districts within the next week or so and Board
members are invited to attend any of the visitations that have been
scheduled and she provided the dates for them. If Board members
can attend they should call the administrator for a complete
schedule.
