Mr. Hawks has asked me to contact you to discuss the Lake
Minnetonka Conservation District’s ("District") proposed ordinance banning storage boats. As
you may remember, I made a presentation when you first considered the proposed ordinance on
Wednesday, June 12, 1996.
At the June 12, 1996 meeting, I sensed that the District had some concerns about how
the residents of Lake Minnetonka may feel about housdxKits such as Mr. Hawks’. Mr. Hawics
and I appreciate the importance to the District of the neighbors’ opinions about the houseboat
and about the proposed ordinance, and we believe that the District should give considerable
deference to the wishes of the residents of Lake Minnetonka -- especially those on Halstead Bay,
where Mr. Hawks lives -- when deciding whether to pass the proposed ordinance.
After the June 12 meeting, we talked to Mr. Hawks’ neighbors to see how they felt about
Mr. Hawks’ houseboat and about the proposed oidinanc.;. Though we expected that a substantial
number of people would support Mr. Hawks, we were astonished by the overwhelming support
the people around the area had for the houseboat.
In light of the support we found for Mr. Hawks and the number of people opposing the
proposed ordinance, we prepared a petition to the '-ake Minnetonka Conservation District. I
enclose a copy of the most recent version of the petition for your review. As you can see, in
the three days that we have been circulating this petition, about 110 residents signed the petition
supporting Mr. Hawks and opposing the proposed ordinance.
Though the sheer number of people willing to support Mr. Hawks is significant, what
is equally impressive is the overwhelming support for Mr. Hawks in the people that we
contacted. So far, every resident that we have spoken with has been willing to sign the petition.
