Date:Mays, 1997
To:Ron Moorse, City Administrator
From:Gary Cheswick, Chief of Police
RE:Sergeant Promotion
I am requesting permission to replace a vacancy of the intermediate command position. This
memo is intended to list the need for that position and clarify the reason for increased supervision
in the management chain of command.
This position was previously that of a Sergeant, and more recently a Lieutenant.
Currently there are three shift supervisors, titled as Corporales. These positions provide
supervision on a limited basis. The Corporals' position relate to minimal managerial
responsibilities and mainly provide for shift work only.
The position of Sergeant provides assistance in reviewing job performance, evaluation of job
productivity and handling personnel related problems (ie. complaints against officers, direction
for internal affair, monitoring investigations etc.). As in the past this continues to be necessary
in the proper management of a public safety unit.
The Sergeant position would provide for street supervisor as well as helping with in house
managerial responsibilities.
The Sergeant will have good technical knowledge of state laws, city ordinances, department
policies, and state and federal case laws.
! f
The Sergeant will be abe to write clear reports and articulate to subordinates all the elements of a
crime and details necessary for proper follow up investigation.
The Sergeant will be able to direct proper response to calls for service and proper initial
investigation of crime.
The Sergeant will be self-motivated and self disciplined to strive to be professional.
The Sergeant should be willing to put the concerns of the citizens and the good of the department
first.
In addition as you had requested a list of job tasks , a job description and information relating to
the Sergeant position have been delivered.
Please review and contact me if you need anything additional.
