TO:
FROM:
DATE:
Mayor and City Council
Ron Moorse, City Administrator
January 24,1997
SUBJECT: New Westonka Senior Center
The Mound-Westonka School District has determined that the current community center building
is to be sold. The current building houses some school district offices, a number of human services
offices, and the Westonka Senior Center. The school district has determined that it will build a new
facility to house the school district offices. However, the new facility will not be large enough to
house either the social service agencies or the Senior Center. Advocates for the Senior Cf'nter are
currently involved in a process of finding a way to construct a building to house the Seni nter.
They would like all of the communities with students in the district to participate in the cost of the
new facility. They have invited both elected and appointed officials from Orono to attend a meeting
scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18 at the Mound City Hall to discuss options for
generating funding for a Senior Center facility.
The “fforts regarding the Senior Center are being made in somewhat of a crisis mode since the
current building and property could be sold at any time. Those involved in the effort need to be
careful to consider all alternatives rather than jumping at the first opportunity that presents itself
The group is moving toward the construction of a new facility. 1 am not aware of whether they have
considered the potential of using an e.xisting facility or if there are any e.xis’ing facilities that might
be able to meet their needs.
%
One source of funding for a facility could be CDBG grant funds. All smaller cities in western
Hennepin County now must compete for approximately $180,000 of CDBG funds. Senior Center
facilities are a high priority under the CDBG program. Also, if several cities submit a Joint grant
application, the application will receive a higher score.
