AUGUST 1999 East Metro Seniors Agenda for Independent living <br />Building toward <br />the senior boom <br />Twin Cities area seniors <br />and their housing needs, from now to 2030 <br />Picture a snake that swallows an elephant. <br />This is how demographers have described the <br />impact of the Baby Boom on the U.S. <br />population profile. Each age group swells and <br />then shrinks as this generation passes through. <br />The elephant is getting ready to retire. The <br />time is fast approaching when one out of every <br />four or five Minnesotans will be 65 or older. <br />As the age balance shifts, the Twin Cities area <br />will need to do more to accomnuxlate the <br />needs of both frail and healthy seniors. <br />Twin Cities area seniors <br />About 239,000 seniors age 65 and older live <br />in the Twin Cities area, which is defined in <br />this report as seven counties: Anoka, Carver, <br />Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and <br />Washington. Seniors make up about 9 percent <br />of the area's population. <br />By 2025, that will change radically.
