COUNCIL MEETINO
r OCT \ ' W99 East Metro SAIL
Counties Served:
Dakota
Ramsey
Washington
CITY OF ORONO
Seniors Agenda for Independent Living
September 28,1999
Dear Twin Cities area leader:
I hope the enclosed summary will prove useful as you consider how to prepare for the doubling
of our local senior population in the next 25 to 30 years.
The report offers local statistics and projections that illustrate the magmtude and some of the
nuances of this population shift. The report also suggests some strategies to ensure that Twin
Cities area seniors have the housing and service options that will allow them to live as
independently as possible.
The good news is that the senior years will indeed be golden years for many of the Baby Boom
generation. As a whole, they are expected to be better off in may ways than previous generations
of seniors.
However, this “senior boom” will bring some profound changes. The suburban Twin Cities
counties are expected to triple or quadruple their senior population. In Ramsey and Hennepin
counties, growth will be less radical in percentages, but very large in actual numbers.
Our region has a window of opportunity — ari3^here from 8 to 15 years — to get ready for some
major growth in demand for public and privi te ser/ices and for senior housing options.
The full report is available online at www.wilder.oi^^wrc. Printed copies can be obtained by
calling East Metro SAIL at 651 -552-3 111.
I would welcome your comments on the report.
