COUNCIL MEETING REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
MAR 81999 DATE: March 8, 1999
Cl l Y OF OHONO ITEM NO II
Department Approval:
Name Gregory A. Gappa
Title Director of Public Services
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
Administrator's Report
Item Description: March for Parks- Resolution
The Park Commission is recommending that the second annual March for Parks Event be held
Sunday, May 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Again, this will be a joint event with the Cities
of Long Lake and Mound. Each participant has to designate one City to receive their donations.
The event will begin at the Orono City Hall with participants traveling south along the Old Crystal
Bay Road Trail to the Luce Line Trail. At the Luce Line Trail, the walkers will head east and the
bikers will head west along the Luce Line Trail. I have attached a brochure from last years March
for Parks Event for your information.
Members of the Park Commissions from the three cities will be soliciting sponsors for this event.
Last year, the sponsors donated both money and items for prizes. All of the participants received
items such as water bottles for participating in the event. There were also cash prizes for the
participants that raised the most money. The Park Commission is envisioning soliciting prizes
from the sponsors to encourage participation in the March for Parks and as an incentive for fund
raising. The Council may wish to consider a policy regarding the receipt of prizes by participants,
so this issue is clarified. The providing of prizes could result in a public perception problem when
all of the donated funds are not used for park improvements.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Consideration of the attached resolution for the 1999 March for Parks Event.
.•i
