D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Coleman:
Included in the 2003-04 Department of Defense budget bill (H.R. 2658) is an appropriation of
$250,000 for a proposed environmental study of the former NiVe missile site in Carver County.
After this missile site was no longer needed by the federal government for defense purposes, it
was used by many other entities, but most recently was used by the Western Area Fire Training
Association (W^TA) for training purposes. After a preliminary investigation, it has been
determined that this site may be environmentally contaminated. Liability to clean up this site
could fall upon the member communities of WAFTA, which include the cities of Chanhassen,
Chaska, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Long Lake, Maple Plain, Mayer, Mound, St. Bonifacius,
Victoria, and Watertown.
The purpose of this letter is to ask for your support in making sure that this appropriation
remains in the Department of Defense budget bill as it is debated in conference committee. The
environmental study of this site is very important in determining what level of contamination
occurred on the site, and without this assistance, the financial burden on the WAFTA member
cities will be very onerous.
Thank you for your assistance in this project and for your continued support for the cities of
Minnesota.
Sincerely,
Barbara A.
