L
GlTYoTORONO
Municipal Offices
StraatMimt:
2750 Kelley Pefimiy
Orono. MN 55356
MaWuf Mirats:
P.O. Box $6
Crystal Bay. MN 55323m
Honorable Senator Mark Dayton
SR-346, Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, District of Columbia 20510
Dear Senator Dayton:
Included in the 2003-04 Department of Defense budget bill (H.R. 2658) is an appropriation of
S250.000 for a proposed environmental study of the former Nike missile site in Carver County.
After this missile site was no longer needed by the federal government for defense purposes, it
was used by many other entities, but most recently was used by the Western Area Fire Training
Association (WAFTA) for training purposes. After a preliminary investigation, it has been
determined that this site may be environmentally contaminated. Liability to clean up this site
could fall upon the member communities of WAFTA, which include the cities of Chanhassen,
Chaska, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Long Lake, Maple Plain, Mayer, Mound, St. Bonifacius,
Victoria, and Watertown.
The purpose of this tetter is to ask lor your support in making sure that this appropriation
remains in the Department of Defense budget bill as it is debated in conference conunittee. The
cnvirorjr.cntal study of this site is very important in detenr.ining what level of contaminaiiun
occurred on the site, and without this assistance, the financial burden on the WAFTA member
cities will be very onerous.
Thank you for your assistance in this project and for your continued support for the cities of
Minnesota.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Peterson
Mayor, City of Orono
Tekphoae (952) 2 69 Um • Fax (952) 249-MlC
