k <br />SEP 0 8 2003 <br />c I I or OHONO <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />DATE: September 4,2003 <br />ITEM NO: 2X- <br />Department Approval: <br />Name Ron Moorse <br />Title City Administrator <br />Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section: <br />City Administrator ’s Report <br />Item Description: Letters to Congressional Delegation Regarding Funding for WAFTA <br />WAFTA is the acronym for a fire training facility in western Hennepin County that is jointly owned <br />by several lake-area cities with fire departments, some of which serve the City of Orono. The site is <br />a former NIKE missile site that was purchased for use as a fire training facilhy. The facility is no <br />longer used. The facility has contaminated soils that need to be cleaned up. There is an on-going <br />process of determining who is responsible for the cost of the clean-up. There are three major entities <br />involved: the Federal Government, who owned the site as a missile site; a utility company, who used <br />the site for training; and the cities, who used the site for training. <br />Representative Kline has authored a bill to obtain Federal funding related to the clean-up. Attached are <br />letters indieating the support of the city for the efforts of our legislative delegation regarding the <br />legislation. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED: <br />Motion to authorize the Mayor to sign letters regarding the efforts of our congressional delegation <br />regarding funding for die WAFTA site clean-up. <br />tiiainr
