1 <br />S 9.34 <br />Subd. 7. Fire Lanes Established. The Council hereby <br />provides for the establishment of Fire Lanes for purposes of <br />ensuring immediate unobstructed access for emergency vehicles and <br />equipment. <br />A. Fire Hydrants. Whether marked or unmarked, fire <br />lanes are hereby established at all public or private fire <br />hydrants, which fire lanes shall extend ten (10) feet on either <br />side of the hydrant and twenty (20) feet in front of the curb or <br />pavement edge nearest the front of the hydrant. <br />B. Building Exits. Whether marked or unmarked, <br />fire lanes are hereby established at all building exits required by ^ <br />the Fire Code or State Building Code, which fire lanes shall extend [O <br />ten (10) feet in all direction from said exits. Where larger fire^%« <br />lanes are required, they shall be established and marked as n <br />provided in Subparagraphs C or D of this Subdivision. <br />C. Existing Properties. The Chief of Police is <br />hereby empowered to order the establishment, designation and <br />maintenance of fire lanes on public or private property wherever <br />and to whatever extent as he may determine is reasonably necessary <br />to ensure open and unobstructed emergency access. In this deter <br />mination, the Police Chief may confer with and accept the <br />recommendations of the Building Official or the Fire Chief of the <br />applicable Fire Service District. Fire Lane Orders shall be in <br />writing and shall be served in person or by registered letter upon <br />the property owner of record, or in the case of commercial <br />properties, may be served upon the tenant occupying the property. <br />Subd. 8. Fire Lane Standards. The actual size, location <br />and extent of required fire lanes shall be determined by the Police <br />Chief in consideration of the particular access need and configura <br />tion on individual properties. As a minimum, all marked and de?ig- <br />naied fire lanes shall be at least 20 feet in unobstructed width, <br />shall have at least 13 feet 6 inches of vertical clearance, shall <br />where necessary provide for a turning radius of at least 50 feet, <br />and shall be constructed of all-weather surfacing capable of I <br />carrying a vehicle axle loading of 5 tons (10,000 pounds). _ \ <br />Subd. 9. Fire Lane Signs and Marking. When a fire lane <br />has been ordered to be established pursuant to Subdivision 7, <br />Subparagraphs C or D, one or more permanent upright metal signs <br />bearing the words "NO PARKING - FIRE LANE", or similar words if <br />approved by the Police Chief, shall be placed designating the <br />restricted area. The number, size and location of required signs <br />shall be determined by the Police Chief. <br />A. When the fire lane is located on public property <br />or within a public right-of-way, the required signs shall be <br />erected by the City or by the public agency having jurisdiction <br />over the property. <br />ORONO CC 222 (4-1-84)
