Gappa <br />Title Director of Public Services <br />Administrator Reviewed: Agenda Section: <br />Public Services Director's Report <br />Item Description: Orono/Long Lake Water System Interconnections <br />Introduction <br />As part of the new Highway 12 project, major utility locations of both sewer and water systems are <br />required in the City of Long Lake. In September 2000, SEII Engineers, completed a modeling study <br />of both the Orono and Long Lake water systems to study future possibilities for the interconnection <br />of the two systems. <br />A recent update to the September 2000 study has just been completed and a copy is attached for your <br />review. 1 his attatached report discusses several topics. The first topic is water main interconnections <br />between the two systems, fhe second topic is the issue of options for possible additional elevated <br />tank storage in conjunction w ith possible w ell rehabilitation or the construction of a new well. The <br />third topic is possible watermain changes for the Orono Industrial Park area. We arc recommending <br />on proceeding with the Orono/Long Lake watermain interconnection project. <br />The second topic regarding elevated storage and well options will require further discussion. The <br />desirable schedule for decision making on this topic is this spring, as the City of Long Lake ’s water <br />tow er is in need of painting. The decision on painting of the Long Lake w ater tower is dependant <br />on a decision regarding additional storage or wells. The third topic regarding the Orono Industrial <br />Park water system will be discus.sed later in this memo. <br />Orunu/Long Lake Water Sy.stem Interconneetions <br />Wc are working on planning for a joint project with the City of Long Lake for the installation of two <br />additional water system interconnections. Currently, there is an c.xisting 8 ” connection at Highway <br />12 and Willow Drive between the two systems. This interconnection is normally closed and only <br />opened for fire situations, or when needed for repair or maintenance on one of the systems. The two <br />cities have an agreement inplaee governing the operation of this interconnection <br />Two additional interconnections .ire recommended to increase the fire How capabilities of both <br />systems. Interconnection of the two systems is needed to provide a reasonable fire flow as the Orono <br />Page 1 of 3
