24
09/21/2022 Page 2 of 2

c. Parking Lot
Interest in extending the bituminous pavement and concrete curb into the existing gravel
parking lot footprint. Possibly paving the north half of the existing parking lot with bituminous
pavement and leaving the southern end as is (gravel). The bituminous could be extended in
the future if desired. A raingarden was also desired to help address the roadway runoff into
the parking lot.
d. Playground
There was little or no interest in a traditional play structure within the park. The strong public
desire to protect and save existing trees and open space within the park limits the possibility of
adding a playground structure. Based on these conditions, the steering committee feels a
playground (natural or traditional) does not fit within the park master plan.
e. Canoe Launch
There is interest in adding an additional canoe rack near the existing canoe launch area. Based
on public support for a small dock and input regarding previous fishing/swimming conflicts, the
steering committee would support the addition of a small dock located at the existing canoe
launch area.
f. Picnic Tables
Public and steering committee input regarding picnic tables was positive. Look for
opportunities to upgrade the existing picnic tables along the beach and an informal seating
area along the north side of the hill.
g. Winter Activities (skate rink, warming house, trails)
There was strong support for an ice rink from Open house attendees with an option for either a
temporary warming house or small structure as long as it did not impact the existing trees.
Plowed trails were also wanted on the lake if possible.
h. Interpretive Signage (history?)
The addition of interpretive panels was brought up and discussed during the second open
house. There was interest in possibly using this as an opportunity to provide historical
background to the park.
i. Others??

5. Review Project Flowchart
a. Parks Commission (draft plan review by the 3rd ?) yes
b. Additional Open House (#3) set date? October 13th (5:30-7:30 pm) in the Orono City Council
Chambers (provide comment period online)
c. Parks Commission (11/7?) yes
d. City Council?

6.
