• 3. About LLRC
a. Mission
To provide expert instruction, promote personal and competitive achievement, and enrich our members
and community through the sport of rowing.
b. Program Objectives
To bring the lifelong sport of rowing to Orono, Long Lake, and the surrounding communities with
programs for athletes from grade 7 to age 70+.Whether people are new to rowing, have special needs,
want to participate for fun and fitness or compete at a high level,we have programs to meet their goals.
c. How LLRC Started
In 2014,a small group of Orono and Long Lake residents endeavored to bring the lifelong sport of rowing
to our community. At the time,a number of adult(master) rowers, both novices and former college
rowers, were searching for a way to practice and learn together, and a handful of youth from the
community was interested in an alternative sport that offered a unique opportunity for those who hadn't
found their niche in traditional high school sports. On January 21,2014, Long Lake Rowing Crew(LLRC)
was founded as a 501(c)(3)non-profit,volunteer-driven organization.
d. Success Stories
Long Lake Rowing has come a long way in 8 years—from starting in an empty parking lot, with only a few
boats,to now competing at the highest levels and opening educational doors for local youth. To date,
LLRC rowers have made their mark at:
Boston College Boston University Brown University
George Washington University Marist College Syracuse University
University of California, Los Angeles(UCLA) University of Kansas University of Minnesota
University of Notre Dame University of Pennsylvania University of St.Thomas
University of Virginia University of Wisconsin-Madison Villanova University
Washington University Williams College
e. From Long Lake to the World!
We are proud of what LLRC has accomplished over the years. LLRC rowers are great ambassadors who
represent our community well when we travel across the US and Canada to compete and at international
events like the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Our rowers take that responsibility very seriously.
Many of our rowers have been invited to attend elite US Rowing national camps and regattas, all because
they were given the unique opportunity to"try rowing"on Long Lake.
