3. Updates to Proposed Long Lake Community Rowing Center
• We have listened to input from residents and have revised our plan, reducing overall square footage by 15%
from our original plan. For reference, the original submission was 9,000 square feet. The current submission is
7,666 square feet.
• Our goal is to minimize environmental impact. We are being advised by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District
and they will work with us before construction on ideas to protect and safeguard the lake.
•The overall height of the building is 22'3"and the second story is reduced in area to be 35%of the first
floor. This is well below the code maximum of 30'0".
• LLRC will help with some of the cost of the City-proposed playground at Summit Park as part of our partnership.
•The public restrooms have been moved to the back of our building and would not require a second structure,
reducing the amount of new hardcover.
•The orientation of the building has changed to maximize the number of trees and privacy at the
beachfront. Trees that may need to be removed during construction will be replaced.
•We are flexible on where our docks will be located on either side of the site, not on or near the beach.
4. New Plan Improvements
From the perspective of the proposed building plan, below are additions to our original plan that have a direct
• benefit to members of the community by reducing vandalism, and providing a safe, modern, and more sanitary
option for park users.
• Permanent public restrooms • Public outdoor shower
• Bike storage • Public deck/observatory
• Public conference room space • Covered canoe/kayak/SUP storage
• Public drinking fountains for people and pets • Dock use(canoe/kayak launch only; no motorized vehicles)
•A small resting/sitting area with picnic tables for the public to use, within viewing distance of the beach.
5. Opportunities for Summit Park
Through our talks with the City of Orono and local law enforcement officials,it's clear that there are ongoing
security concerns at Summit Park, which continues to draw after-hours activities that are disruptive and often
illegal. Local city officials have expressed that a building on-site will provide greater security and a more consistent
presence to discourage these activities.
•There have been more than 15 police calls at the park since 2017.
• The City has also indicated a need for permanent public restrooms at the beach for trail users and beachgoers
and seeks a partner to help finance these and other amenities.
•At the November 2021 Orono Park Commission meeting, a community member provided details on natural
playscapes. We agree that natural playscapes are a key element to promoting healthy play in the area. As a
• group,we'd like to help by presenting ideas for how the boathouse could assist in that scheme.
