The purpose of this council action is to gain council approval to proceed with design and <br />engineering for the Bederwood sports field project. <br />2.Background. The Orono Parks Commission is seeking to provide a sports field at Bederwood Park as <br />well as expanding a paving the parking lot, providing a walking trail and other improvements. The intent <br />of the project is to provide a facility to support youth sports efforts in the area. To help offset the cost of <br />the project the city submitted a grant application to the Hennepin County youth sports grant program for <br />$211,550 and was approved for $136,275. The next step is to prepare detailed plans for the project and <br />then solicit quotes for construction. <br />3.Project Scope. Based on the grant amount staff recommends reducing the scope to include the <br />construct turf sports field, walking trial, paved parking lot and irrigation system. The other improvements <br />(small field, picnic tables, batting cage, bleachers and trees) can be added later as funding becomes <br />available. <br />4.Cost. The revised estimated cost for the project is $313,565. Bolton and Menk provided a fee estimate <br />of not to exceed $37,500 to survey and design support. <br />5.Funding. Funding for the City cost share, $177,290 for the project would come from the Parks Fund. <br />The fund’s project 2019 end of year balance is $468,067. <br />6.Staff Recommendation. I recommending approval of Bolton and Menk proposal and that the city <br />proceed with project development at the reduced scope. <br />7.
