Specifically, we are looking to verify that all organ-
ic soils had been removed from the proposed building pad
area and that the structure will rest upon naturally occur-
ring mineral soil capable with a reduced likelihood of set-
tlement after construction in completed.
Of course, the method of investigation that would provide
the greatest degree of confidence in test results is a com-
plete set of penetration borings. However, as this would in-
volve at least a week's delay in the project and a cost of
$700 , this alternative was not elected. You chose to have
some hand auger borings performed instead.
Arriving on the site. I found that the building pad area
had already been prepared, and that some footings had beer:
poured in the residence portion of the structure. The aaray.P
atca had been excavated and filled, but no formwork had com-
mencec. I understand that it is this garage area that caused
some concern.
The proposed structure sort of benches into the existing
sloped terrain. Normal topsoil and what appears to be firm
mineral subsoil can be seen on excavation wails -n upsl;;pe
areas. 1 commenceb several hard auger borings in the grsge
pad area, in a pattern likely to be indicative of subs:,ii
conditions.
Logs of two representative borings are enclosed. Boring 1 is
about in the center of the common wall between the garage
and the residence portion. It indicates the expected gran-
ular fill. to about 1-3;4' of depth. Below is a black organ-
