Mr Tom Terry
11 May 1968
Page 2
is silty clay, about. 9" in depth (exact thickness difficult
to det.erm4,e due to transition). Basal soil appears to be a
gray clad oam, becoming lighter in color with depth.
ether t . were performed in the central and outer por-
tion of garage pad area. Boring 3 is rather represernta-
tive of what was found. It indicates the sandy fill, to 2.5"
of depth. At this point commences a dart: gray clay loam. a
very borderline soil due to its color and the trace of or-
ganics. Again. color lightens with depth. being almost brown
in color when the boring was terminated at 5'. Three other
borings in the area indicated similar results.
Groundwater is present. pr-:)bably ,Just below the bottorr: :,f
the fill. However. 1 did n,-,t spend enough time on the site
to allow water level to stabilise in any bore hole.
We recommend that. at least in the vicinity of Boring 1. the
organic soil should by ex^avat.ed from below foundation lev-
el. The excavation should be oversized 1:1 plus one foot on
each side from the edge of footing. This excvation should be
"followed out' until it dissipates (tc a condi*ion represen-
tative of Boring 3 results) or extends beyond the building
pad area oversizing. Compacted fill should rellace the exca-
vated soil. We do not recommend extending footings deeper as
the subsoil appears somewhat. soft. You need the compacted
fill to dissipate foundation loads.
When the excavation is completed, it should be inspected to
verify conformance with these ret,ommenda,.ions. This can be
done by the City building inspector or our associates at In-
stant Testing Company.
Enclosed is a sheetd,-t.ailing the limitations of this type
of investigation. Particularly note that. the site is not
warranted ag.sinst loss cue to soil conditzon!s. ever: if tnese
recommendations are followed. Also be advised that we cannot
certify the basal soil as having any particular allowable
iVl:tlCl.Yl.lvil bearing capacity. ':'his is due to the very limited
testing authorized.
An inv^ice for c-ur servic-es is. er:clased. Not.Y that. in lig::t.
of your assisting me. only tw-j borings. the rines repvrte .
are invoiced.
