<br />service hasn't gone unno-
<br />ticed. The South
<br />Lake -Excelsior Chamber of
<br />Commerce recently
<br />announced the recipients of
<br />community support.
<br />Nye said the award came
<br />as a surprise.
<br />"We're very grateful and
<br />honored and hope to contin-
<br />ue to not only support the
<br />community but serve the
<br />area for many years to
<br />come," Nye said.
<br />Since the '90s, the South
<br />Lake -Excelsior Chamber of
<br />Commerce has recognized
<br />excellence in the business
<br />community. This year, the
<br />chamber will present three
<br />awards — Business Excel-
<br />lence, Community Hero and
<br />the Green Award.

<br />The company got its start after a conversation around the kitchen table

<br />After nearly 27 years in
<br />Long Lake, JEM Technical
<br />Marketing,- Inc. -is -moving the
<br />majority of its operations one-
<br />quarter mile away to Orono.
<br />In May the goal is to consol-
<br />idate its sales, engineering,
<br />warehouse, assembly and cor-
<br />porate offices into a new
<br />40,000 -square -foot facility at
<br />550 Old Crystal Bay Road, said
<br />John Menge, president of JEM.
<br />The machine shop will stay at
<br />its current site.
<br />Menge, who founded the
<br />business with his wife Sheryl
<br />in 1984, said they also recent-
<br />-ly submitted an - intent to
<br />purchase the 33,000 -square -
<br />foot building on Old Crystal
<br />Bay Road south of the new
<br />building with the intent for it
<br />to house the machine shop.
<br />The land between the build-
<br />ings also has been purchased
<br />for future growth.
<br />JEM, a company with a
<br />modest beginning from a con-
<br />versation at a kitchen table,
<br />now employs 90 people and
<br />generates more than $28 mil-
<br />lion in annual revenue.
<br />It -began as a "little --:rep.
<br />company" marketing fluid
<br />power products in the upper
<br />midwest, said Menge. He had
<br />been a branch manager of a
<br />company out of Chicago for
<br />eight years and decided it was
<br />time to run his own business,
<br />which he said was one of his
<br />goals in life.
<br />Menge handled the sales
<br />calls at factories, and his wife
<br />was the "inside person," he said
<br />In 1986, JEM moved into
<br />distributing fluid power prod-
<br />ucts as wellasadding several -
<br />instrumentation lines. Those
<br />additions, and the need for
<br />warehouse space, fueled the
<br />move to its first location in
<br />Long Lake.
<br />The company moved
<br />toward designing and
