C. Granular Cushion: Specific granular borrow soil material placed beneath slabs and other
subcomponents within the building area.
D. Foundation Backfill: Soil material placed against building footings and walls.
E. Frost Protection Zone: The application of styrofoam insulation at walk and stoop areas
adjacent to the building where frost action must be significantly limited.
F. Low Permeability Soil: Specific cohesive soil material placed beneath topsoil where it
desirable to limit infiltration of water into underlying soils.
G. Geotextile: Permeable Fabric for use in separating granular borrow(subgrade
• improvement)from subgrade soils at pavement areas.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Topsoil: The top layer of on site variable depth soil that is designated "A" or"B" horizon
as defined by the Soil Science Society of America. All topsoil shall be free of rocks,
cobbles and other foreign matter greater than 2" in any dimension.
B. Organic Topsoil: Special topsoil for use as a medium for establishing and sustaining marsh
vegetation at the perimeter and shallow water portion of the management/treatment pond
and the wetland mitigation area. Organic topsoil shall meet the following requirements:
Mmimum Maximum
Material passing the 2.0 mm Sieve 85%
Clay 5% 30%
Silt 10% 60%
Sand/Gravel 5% 50%
Organic Matter 15% 25%
pH 6.1 7.5
1. Texture of topsoil shall be classified according to the engineering definition of particle
size. Texture shall be determined by the method described in AASHTO T-88. Soil
pH and percent organic shall be determined by the current standard testing procedure
of the University of Minnesota Soil Science Department.
C. Unsuitable Material: All saturated and unsaturated mixtures of soil containing organic
material such as humus, spongy matter, roots, stumps, muck, peat, and fatty clay, rubbish
and other objectionable materials. This material shall be removed from the site
D. Select Suitable Material: Non-expansive mineral soil free of significant rock quantities and
having a plasticity index of 15 or less, and a liquid limit of 35 or less. Soil shall be free of
any materials that may prevent attaining design densities and within 2%(plus or minus) of
optimum moisture content.
• ADDENDUM#1
1607.001 - ORONO ICE ARENA(CP-2) Page 02200 -4
