C. Aggregates for Exterior Horizontal Concrete: Limits of deleterious substances and
physical property requirements of fme and coarse aggregates shall comply with ASTM
C33 and following additional requirements for exterior horizontal concrete:
Amount of deleterious substances in fme aggregate shall not exceed following limits:
Weight Percent of
Item Total Sample Maximum
Clay lumps and friable particles 0.5
Material finer than No.200 sieve 3.0
Coal,lignite and shale 0.5
1. When fme aggregate is tested for potential reactivity by chemical method in
accordance with ASTM C289,relationship between quantity Rc(reduction in
alkalinity)and quantity Sc(dissolved silica) shall indicate that material is innocuous.
2. Coarse aggregate for exterior horizontal concrete(other than toppings less than 2
inch in thickness) shall be size number 67 (3/4 inch to No.4)and shall be 100
percent crushed quarry rock composed of basalt, quartzite, granite, limestone or
dolomite. For toppings less than 2 inch in thickness use size number 8.
3. When subjected to 5 cycles of soundness test using magnesium sulfate in accordance
with ASTM C88,coarse aggregate shall have loss of not more than 18 percent.
4. Coarse aggregate shall have maximum abrasion loss of 40 percent by weight when
tested in accordance with ASTM C131,Grading B.
5. Requirements of ASTM C33,Table 3,as to amount of material in coarse aggregate
having specific gravity lighter than 2.4 shall include iron oxide.
D. Maximum size of coarse aggregates for normal weight concrete shall comply with ACI
301,Article 3.6,but shall not be larger than 1-1/2 inch for footings and caissons,3/4 inch
for columns, beams, slabs and toppings exceeding 2 inch in thickness,3/8 inch for
toppings 2 inch or less in thickness.
E. Water. Fresh, clean, potable, free from injurious amounts of oils, acids, alkalies, salts,
organic materials, or other substances that may be deleterious to concrete or steel.
F. Fly Ash Admixture: ASTM C618,Class C. Addition of fly ash to regular weight mixes
to reduce amount of cement is permissible as follows:
1. When used in exposed concrete it shall be used throughout for uniform color.
2. Weight of fly ash added to designed mixes shall be greater than reduction of weight
of cement, with proportions of cement and fly ash selected for 28 day compressive
ADDENDUM#1
1607.001 -ORONO ICE ARENA(CP-2) Page 03300-4
