,,.
,` • .
 77•045
Braucr $ Assoc. . Inc. •2- FQbruary 24, 1977
The borings were probod imaediately after their copietfon
to check for the preseace of groundwater. The borings were
; also rochecked prior to lcaving the site oa Fobruary 17.
Absence of groundwatar was noted in both probings of the
borings to their respactive 15-foot teraination depths. A
rechock of tlie boring 1 week later also encountered no •
groundwater to the 15-foot depth.
The percolation tests were run in 6-inch diameter boles
drilled to an approxiate depth of 36 inches, ia accosdaace
with procedures recomiaended by the finnesota Department of
Health (MHD) and with the procedures recommended by the City
of Orono. In accordanca with these procedures, the bottoa
and sides of the holes were scratched with a knife blade to
remove any smeared soil surfaces and to vrovide a natural
soil interface into which the water may percolate. ` Two •
inches of coarse sand was then placed in the bottoat of the
holes to prevent scouring. The holes were then carefully
filled with clear water to a minimum depth of 12 inches over •
tha top of the sand layer and allowed to soak overnight witb
the percolation tests being conducted the folloxiag day. An
insulation material was placed over the holes prior to
leaving the site to preveat freezing of the water sad soils
overnight.
,
RESULTS:
_
The log of the soils encountered in the bosias and the 't`
water level observatins are shown on the sttaehed Loa of -
Boring sheets. -
Boring B•1, taken in Lot S, encountl. } j
silty sand >'.r luviva
, brown in color. with.,af.ta ,, ,,'rQm
.
the surface to the 7-foot depth.= Cl`ayaAdi'iCf'sl till
was then encountered from the 7-foot depth to; the 15•foot
terminati e t the boring. ,. } eF,
Boring B-2, taken i Lot 4, encounteredil sYk browa;silty •
sand topsoil layer from the surface to approximately: the 4-
foot depth and was immediately underlafn by coarse a.luvitu
silty sand between the 4 and the 7-foot depth.
