Adding 1" of black dirt prior to seeding will be fine. You can add more black
dirt/topsoil in the areas outside of the wetland boundary if desired to promote healthy growth, but
please limit it to 1" within the delineated wetland. I also wanted to confirm what seed mixes you will be
using within the wetland. You had last indicated the following:
"To prevent the buckthorn and other invasive weeds from taking over, I was looking at planting a meadow
mix from Prairie Moon for the area that is wet (500 sq. feet). For the rest of the area (1500 sq ft) I was
considering planting grass (mix of Kentucky Blue & Rye grass). I also was considering planting a few water-
loving trees (Cedar and Silver Maple) in the area. Are there issues with planting trees?"
I had confirmed with you that this planting plan was acceptable, is this still what you had in mind? The straw
maUequivalent is a definitely a good idea to help the seed establish. The perimeter will need to stay in place
until the area has adequate vegetative cover. Please do not remove it until we have given you the OK (give us
a call or e-mail when you think the coverage is adequate for it to be removed). I'll have an inspector get out
there soon to have a look.
Your follow-up is much appreciated. I'll be in touch.
Catherine Bach
District Technician
Minnehaha Creek Watershed District
18202 Minnetonka Boulevard
Deephaven, MN 55391
Direct: (952) 641-4504
Main Office: (952) 471-0590
Fax: 952-471-0682
www.minnehahacreek.orq
2
