A nemo from John (�erhardson, Public ��orks LUCE LTrIE BRIDGE Coordinator, concerning the Luce Line Bridqe Orono Orchard Road dated November 14 , 1979 , states: In P4ay o� 1979 , the Departrment of TJatura? Resources subnitted a plan to replace the wooden bridge on Orono Orchard R�ad with a one hundred foot clear sPan wood and steel bridc�e. � Af_ter receiving all Pertinent information, the new bridge was approved in Jul��, 1979 bv the Orono Council. On rdovember 14 , 1979, �4r. Glenn Cook and I met with rir. Del Barber, Department of *datural Resources ,to discuss a chanc�e in the oric�inal plan. P�Ir. Barber explained that when receiving bids for the bridge, an alternate bid was received that would lower the cost of the bridc�e by approxir_latelv $15,000 to 520 , 000. '"he difference being that instead of a wood steel bridge it would be an all steel hridqe �aith a wood deck. The specifications of the all steel bridge rteet or exceed the requirerients, and the t��ne of steel used takes on a dark brown color after six months of exposure to the elements , there- fore, blending into the environr►ent. Therefore, the Department of Natural Resources is rec�uesting apnroval from the Cit�� of Orono to be allowed to construct the all steel bridge over Orono Orchard Road. Council Meeting - November 27, 1979 Glenn Cook, City Enc�ineer, explained the construction of the bridc�e and also stated that there would be a railinc� 42" high. (Continued)
