Dick Benson, City Administrator, presented the ORONO �OL£' COURSE SI�N City Council with a memo frorl �Tohn Gerhardson, Public ��7orks Coordinator, concerninq an advertising sign for the Orono c�olf course dated October 10, 1979 , cahich states : The City of Orono does presently have a 3 ' X6 ' inforriation sign erected at the intersection of Highway 12 and i�latertown Road in Lonc� T ake. The sign is placed so as to inf_orm west bound traffic on Highway 12 how to get to the Orono golf course. The sign is on Burlington Northern property. In Psay, 1979, the Piinnesota Department of "'rans- portation notif_ied the City of Orono that the City was in violation of Minnesota Statute 173. 13 subd, l. '?'hat statute states that no advertising device may be erected or allowed to exist adjacent to an_y primary or interstate highway unless a valid permit for such device has been ohtained fror,i the Coru�issioner of mransnortation. There- fore, the City has made application to Burlington Northern f�r leasing �ancl to nlace the sign. On September 29 , 1979 , we received frorl IIurlinqton Northern a lease agreement and the cost for leasing the land for the sic�n. As per the agreement, the first f?ve years would cost the City $425 or S85 per year. The second five years, $375 or $75 per year, and $375 for each subsec�uent five-year �eriod. The next step is to apply to the City of_ Long Lake for a permit to have an advertising sign placed in the City of Long Lake. Once a permit is ' obtained from Long Lake, application to the P4innesota Department of mransportation must be com�leted and a $5. 00 permit fee naid. Therefore, it is my recommendation to lease the • property from Burlington Northern Railroad for the above mentioned price providing that a permit can be granted to the City of Orono from the Citl� of Long Lake for the placement of a 3'X6 ' information sign for the Orono Golf Course.
