. REGULAR MEETING OF TFiE ORONO COUNCIL, APRIL 13, 1978 Page 17 Mr. Jim Olson, City Engineer, reviewed his letter RING ROUTE concerning the ring route dated April 12 , 1978, rhich is attached. Letter - Pages 18-21 Mrs . Sara Wyatt, 5680 Echo Road, Excelsior: Fiow can we interpret engineers comparable numbers? Jim Olson: We reviewed the facts as they came to us. Mrs . Wyatt: The County wants to go straight north. If you go straight north, then traffic can disperse to all points. Mayor Van Nest: At one time, we supported the north route; but Fiennepin County� dropped it off their five-year plan. That is why we, through our engineering and Hennepin County' s concurrence, developed the diagonal route. Constructing a road north would only be a half-way proposition and would not be a fair expenditure of funds and it is doubtful if this could be supported by P�I.S.A. monies. Unidentified person: You are not considering our �roblem. Mayor Van Nest: �ae have had three public hearings on this matter and many other public meetings to consider this proposal. Mr. Gehrman: I have reviewed the proposed routes and I know the straight north route is safer. Mrs. Wyatt: Mr. Jim Wold, from Hennepin County, said the north route is only ten years away. Mayor Van Nest: This is new information. Unidentified person: How about bike/hike trails? Jim Olson: Gravel shoulders are part of the project and are not suitable for bike/hike trails. - Unidentified person: Will Hennepin County come back and four-lane County Road #15? Mayor Van Nest: Not without our permission. This has been dropped from their plans. ^.ouncilmember Paurus : I have been part of the study :ommittee on transportation for many years and I think that we have taken enough time to weigh all the facts and alternatives. The City Council has heard all the arguments and now we should act. (Continued) (Page 22)
