 ,
 REGULAR t1ELTING OF TI3E ORONO COUNCIL, SEPTI,I4I3ER 26, 1977 Page 21
Yhen detailed design of the puNping stations was ORONO-LONG LAhE
• done, it became apiarent that the Orono station INTERCEPTOR
operating with a 1G" forcerain could cause the (Continued)
Long Lake station to lose the capability of pur.mp-
ing its design flow.
 .
The 13" forcernain allows a selection of purnps
which are essentially the same for both stations. .
This means operating conditions will be such
that the overall system will act like a single
• pumping station with two pumps and 100% standby.
+ ihe hydraulics of a system hich includes two
punping stations with long force mains discharging
a single force main is very complex. `'hese
operating probleris were not analyzed in the
preliminary desicn phase of this project.
An added benefit of the 18" forcemain is that,
a instead of 125 or 150 horsepower motors that
would be required for each of the Orono purnps
with the 16" line, 100 horsepower motors can
be used. This results in a substantial enercy
saving. Even with the 18" forcemain, the Orono
station will be unable to handle r:lore than the
flows projected in the report and approved bv
• Orono. "
 End oi letter
Payor Van Nest commented that you will notice that
the design flow used in the Addendum to the
engineering report includes Baker Park, City of
Idaple Plain, and the Vo-Tech School which were
to be reraoved from the design criteria for the
. Orono-Long Lake interceptor. You will also
note that they have increased the size of the
line on the Orono portion from 16" to 18" .
The Orono City Council feels strongly that vae
must have a complete understanding on the
sewer service area for this interceptor as
• well as the design criteria for the flows to be
included before the project gets started. It
has been our experience that after the sewer
goes in the ground there is no way to change the
impact of what the sewer was designed to handle.
The City of Orono wants to be certain that the
proposed M.U.S.A, line and Corlprehensive Sewer
Plan are consistent with Orono' s Planning and
, Comprehensive Guide Plan.
P9ayor Van Nest moved, Butler seconded, to enter
the Orono-Long Lake Interceptor, Addendurn #2 ,
Plans and Specifications on the October 11, 1977
Council meeting agenda. P2otion, Ayes (4) - 21ays (0) .
w
•
