Page 38
' ' Members of the Orono City Council May 23 , 1977
other hand, feel compelled to take our case directly to you and seek
the relief to which we feel we are entitled. We have tried to show .
that a relatively minor sacrifice in water override revenues of about
$600 from you at this time would eventually be offset by increased
school water consumption and would result in an eventual savings to
the district of about $5 , 000 annually...
We, therefore, believe the City of Orono would be - justified n
• granting special consideration to the school district for sewer and
water rate reductions since these savings will inure to the benefit
of patrons of the City of Orono as well as the school district.
It is our further belief that our request should be granted
because our practice and playing fields are subjected each year to
increased use by youth and adult teams from the community which are
not a direct part of the school program. As a result of .this, the
school has been forced to undertake an intensified maintenance program
requiring re-sodding, seeding, fertilizing and extensive watering to
maintain suitable turf for these activities.
 ' .
Favorable action tonight on yo ur part, we believe, would be
positive evidence that the;.:City of Orono is sympathetic to the finan-
cial constraints facing the district and wishes to support the school
in its efforts to retain a quality educational program and adequately
maintain its facilities for use by the school and community.
Respectfully submitted,
The Orono Board of Education

by:
 ,-.--,-,.. !. '-_,-.-
•
William A.
