" <br /> � The Noise Control Act of 1972 states that Federal <br /> action is essential to deal with major noise <br /> • sources in commerce, control of which require <br /> � national uniformity of treatmento To that end, it <br /> i� the purpose of the Act to estal�lish a Means <br /> � for effective coordination of Federal research <br /> and activities in noise control, to authorize <br /> � the establishment of Federal noise emission <br /> tandards for products distributed in commerce, <br /> � and to provide information to the nublic respecting <br /> the noise emission and noise reduction characteristics <br /> � of such products. The Noise Control Act, hoc�ever, <br /> � nlaces the primary resnonsibility for the control <br /> of noise i�ith State and local governmentse <br /> �� One responsibility of the Federal Government is <br /> � to assist State and local governments ��ith <br /> technical inforMation on noise and its effect <br /> � on the health and welfare of the nublic. Should <br /> your corimunity at this time be without a local <br /> S noise ordinance, I would urge you to contact <br /> � your local government and express your interest <br /> in noise control. Pde are presently working with <br /> � municipalities interested in establishing a noise <br /> control ordinance. Region V also has available <br /> � sound level meters for loan to communities <br /> interested in surveying their noise environment <br /> � �rior to proposing a noise control ordinance. <br /> The'.r ineters can be loaned for a short period <br /> � of time at no cost to the communitye If your <br /> � community does not have noise control regulations <br /> at present, we will be glad to review a draf_t of <br /> � any regulations which they might propose.
