Memorandum Bonestroo
Project: 4725 North Shore Drive z33s H9nway se w
St.Paul,MN 55113
To: Darren Amundsen Slope Restoration Date: il/8/10
Owner: John Roedel Te1651-636-4600
Fax 651-636-1311
From: Philip Caswell, P.E. Ciient: City of Orono, MN
www.bonestroo.com
Re: 10-3490 File No:000139-10000-1
Review Summary:
Revised and supplemental information for the proposed slope reconstruction at 4725 North
Shore Drive has been reviewed and comments are provided below. The information provided
includes the following:
1. Drawings—Civil Solutions Group, LLC: 1) SITE PLAN
(dated 11-4-10) 2)TYPICAL SLOPE SECTION
2. Memorandum —Civil Solutions Group, LLC(dated 11-4-10)
3. Design Calculations—Civil Solutions Group, LLC(dated 11-4-10)
4. Geotechnical Report Addendum #1 —Northern Technologies, Inc.
(dated 11-4-10)
This information directly addresses the review comments provided following our previous
review (Bonestroo, October 28, 2010). Specifically, these revisions and responses include:
Re: Comment No. 1; The bench cut dimensions have been revised to OSHA Standards,
This is acceptable. We further understand that the work will progress from the slope toe
. upward, so that the exposure of the free-standing vertical cuts will be minimized.
Re: Comment No. Z:As per the geotechnical engineer for this project(Norfhern Techno%gies,
Inc.)the design parameters for the on site material shall be 500/bs(per sq, ft,)of cohesion
and an internal friction angle of 23 degrees. With this information Civil Solutions Group has
designed the slope using 1.3 safety factor.
This is acceptable. If the certainty of the soil parameters used for the design is considered to
be sufficient, the use of a safety factor of 1.3 is at the discretion of the engineer.
Re: Comment No. 3: This particular note has been revised to '8"LOW PERMEABLE SOIL
(HYDRO-SEED EROSIDN PROTEG770N AS PER CONTRACTOR SUBMI77"AL). It is understood
- by Civi/Solutions Group that the contractor has previously submilted the erosion protection
p/an.
I have no information re: this submittal, and cannot comment on its acceptability. The
erosion protection of the slope directly affects the stability of the slope, and the proposed
design should be reviewed closely by those familiar with erosion protection of steep slopes.
