STO II Stork Twin City Testing Corporation
Materials Technology
Proposed Addition at Residence 965 Edgewood Hills Road Page 7 of 9
Orono, Minnesota
Stork Twin City Testing Corporation Project #3106831
4.3 Foundations
It appears feasible to support the proposed residential home addition on conventional
spread footings, after completion of the earthwork procedures as outlined in section 4.2.
The building footings should bear on the native competent soils or on the engineered fill.
We recommend that the home addition footings be designed for a maximum net
allowable soil bearing pressure of up to 1500 pounds per square foot (psf). A factor of
safety of at least 3.0 against foundation shear failure was considered in this
recommended design bearing pressure.
All perimeter foundations in heated building space should be placed at a minimum
depth of 42 inches below exterior grades for frost protection. Interior footings may be
placed at any convenient depth below the floor slab. In unheated areas where deeper
frost penetration may occur, we recommend that the foundations have a minimum soil
cover of 60 inches for frost protection.
Based on the above recommendations, we estimate total settlements of the building
foundations of less than 1 inch, and the differential settlements of 1/2 inch or less.
4.4 Floor Slabs
Site preparation should include removing surface vegetation and subcutting existing fill
as needed to allow for placement of a 1' sand section beneath the floor slab. The
existing fill should be surface compacted prior to placement of the sand section.
Particular attention should be paid to properly compacting the fill against the
foundations and within the utility trench backfill beneath the floor slab. Inadequate
compaction at these locations may cause cracking of the slab from subsidence of the
fill. The floor slabs may be designed to be structurally independent of the building
foundations or walls.
This agreement shall be governed exclusively by the general terms and conditions of sale and performance of testing services by Stork Twin City
Testing,Inc.a North Carolina business corporation("TCT")dd.02/04/2001.
