Department Approval:
Name:
Title:
Item #11 - CCAgenda - 09/13/2010
No Parking Zone on Kelley Parkway [Page 1 of 3]
ORONO POLICE DEPARTMENT
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: August 31, 2010
Item No:
fV ` Administrator Reviewed: Agenda Section:
Correy Farniok
Police Chief CY
Item Description: No Parking Zone on Kelley Parkway — Resolution
DISCUSSION:
Parking is currently allowed only on the south side of Kelley Parkway from Old Crystal Bay
Road to the east edge of Public Works. The remainder of Kelley Parkway is posted "No Parking"
except parking is allowed on the north side of Kelley Parkway in areas adjacent to Stonebay that
have designated parking bump -outs. Kelley Parkway has seen a significant increase in parking
and safety issues related to student parking from the Orono High School. Students are using this
area to park and are creating potentially hazardous conditions due to the amount of pedestrian
traffic walking in the roadway, vehicles stopping to drop off others at their cars, vehicles
stopping to talk/socialize with friends, vehicles are parking in front of fire hydrants and
obstructing entrance/exits of the dental office and creating limited sight lines for individuals
coming to and leaving these businesses. This part of the road is also a primary route for
emergency vehicles and public works vehicles. It is staff recommendation that the south side of
Kelley Parkway from Old Crystal Bay Road to the east edge of Public Works be posted as a "No
Parking" area.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Motion to approve attached resolution to have signs placed on the south side of Kelley Parkway
east of Old Crystal Bay Road as "No Parking".
